In Vietnam, this rates of depression and anxiety during the perinatal period is much higher. According to a study, the rate of depression and anxiety in pregnant women in Ho Chi Minh City was 32.8%; in Hanam Province the rate was 39.8% in the first trimester and 28.6% in the third trimester.
Children born to mothers with mental illness tend to experience higher rates of aggression, physical underdevelopment, and difficulty in social interactions and academics. A mother who experiences mental illness may encounter many personal difficulties which limit her ability to care for herself, her child, and her family in the way that she would like to.
