CARE FOR EARLY CHILD DEVELOPMENT
Care for early child development is of the utmost importance. The World Health Organization has documented that the brain is most malleable in early years. Children have the most potential for development in the first three years of life. Therefore, experiences during this time shape a child for the rest of his or her life. Utilization of the early childhood years to foster development will stimulate brain development to help build the child’s skill sets for life.
The involvement of caregivers is key to the healthy development of children. We believe that every caregiver should be given the chance to learn the following information:
- A child’s living environment has great influence on the brain development. In particular, the brain develops quickly when the child can see and process images (from 2 to 6 months).
- The brain grows to 80% of its adult size by 3 years of age. Proper brain development requires formation of millions of synapses, tiny connections between cells in your nervous system, that are crucial for cognitive processes. Problems involving these connections will have direct impact on child’s cognition, or ability to learn and adapt.
- The development of some brain functions are completed as early as 6 years of age. Hearing and vision function develop by 3 to 4 months of age, language skills develop around 6 months to 2 years of age and problem-solving skills develop from 7 months to 10 years.
- Child brain development requires practical experiences and stimulation via play and interaction with their caregivers. A child will reach her full potential when the caregiver responds to his or her interactions and encourages continuation of play and learning.
UNDERSTANDING AND PRACTICING “CARE FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT”
“Care for child development” refers to the behaviors and practices of caregivers to provide the food, health care, stimulation, and emotional support necessary for their child’s healthy survival, growth, and development. Education to caregivers about child development should not be isolated to a description of skills required for effective care, but should also include practical guidelines on implementation and performance of these skills. Caregivers who learn to respond to their child with affection and interest are able to help their child reach his or her full developmental potential..
GREEN PINE CLINIC PRINCIPLES
The Green Pine Clinic’s focus is on preventive care to support child growth and development. We support families by:
- Assessing the current health status of the child, identifying developmental problems of their children, and teaching caregivers in the skills required to practice “care for child development.”
- Counseling and educating caregivers on ways to improve the quality of care they deliver to their child..
- Evaluating, diagnosing, and proposing interventions for developmental delays
OUR VISION
Green Pine Clinic is a brand of comprehensive and preventive care for pregnant women and infants. In the future, GPC will be scaled up throughout the country to bring the best home-based care for all Vietnamese children. We will document the operation of this model and its evidence of impact on child growth and development and then use this evidence to influence and inform policy makers. We aim to revise the current Vietnamese policy on child care toward one focused on early childhood development and preventive care and to integrate this policy in all regions of Vietnam.
