The weather in North of Vietnam is in transition from Winter to Spring. During this period, children often suffer from respiratory diseases. In order to help parents understand and have a proper treatment for their children, The Green Pine Clinic collaborated with kindergartens and educational facilities in Hanoi to deliver workshops on the following topic: “Treatment for cough, asthma and fever without overusing antibiotics for children.”
The main content of the workshop is to guide parents on how to recognize serious symptoms of common respiratory diseases. Parents will also be advised and guided to be able to manage their children’s respiratory diseases at home, use medicine safely (antipyretics, cough medicine, antibiotics ..) and practical support on how to ventilate children’s airways.
Mr.T, a father attending the workshop explained: “My child often coughs, I buy him cough medicine and antibiotics myself. After taking medication my child stops coughing for a few days then he starts coughing again”.
Dr. Vu Thi Lan, Head of the Green Pine Clinic, a former dean at the Pediatric Respiratory Department of Saint Paul Hospital, program’s lecturer advised: “It is a danger when parents buy medicine to treat their children themselves.”
Children with chronic persistent cough, the disease is more serious at night and usually no fever symptoms, are likely to suffer from asthma. Thus, parents should take children to see a doctor immediately because taking antibiotics in this case is ineffective and causes antibiotics resistance. This has negative effects on the treatment for children in the future..
Parents are most interested in information containing guidance about the flapping vibration method. This is a simple method to ventilate children’s airways when they show symptoms of: coughing, wheezing with much phlegm, poor feeding, vomiting due to coughing. Dr. Lan practiced the flapping vibration method on a child with solid phlegm while the parents’ observed. After 3 minutes, the child’s voice was back to normal, phlegm drifted down the bronchial and then was discharged through the digestive system.
Dr. Lan also said: “Children who often suffer from respiratory diseases, prevention is the most important. Parents need to ensure their children are vaccinated adequately, kept warm and especially not bath children with cold water and feed them cold food. When giving medicines to their children, parents need to follow doctor’s guidance.
Mrs Huong, Principal of Hanh Tinh Xanh kindergarten said: “The training course provided various and useful information not only for parents but also teachers in our kindergarten. Currently, there are various resources available in the Internet. Therefore, it is hard to identify the reliable source for expert advice as precise as this workshop offers.”
The programs are implemented in Hanh Tinh Xanh kindergarten and English center VietChild on January 16th, 2016 and will also take place in Gau Misa kindergarten on January 23th, 2016.
